Every event is rooted in giving back

When you show up to MKE Books & Beers, you’re doing more than enjoying a great night out, you’re helping support local shelters and Milwaukee literacy nonprofits. Together, we’re putting more books into more hands and building a community where everyone has access to stories, connection, and the joy of reading.

Behind The Books

Hey there! I’m Destiny Van Hoesen, the founder of MKE Books & Beers, born and raised right here in Milwaukee. I’ve been a book lover for as long as I can remember (shoutout to every childhood library card I wore out). Reading has always been my happy place, and I wanted to find a way to bring that joy to others but with a little twist.


One day, after a few drinks and book chats with friends, I thought why isn’t there a book fair for adults? You know, the kind we had as kids but with cocktails, local vendors, and sunshine. That idea turned into MKE Books & Beers.

Milwaukee is such a special place, and I care deeply about making a difference here. Our book fairs are just the beginning of what I want to bring to our city.


Our Mission

Our goal is simple: make space for people to connect, discover new stories, and give back to the city we love.

Why

I started this because Milwaukee was missing something, a space where people could come together over books, drinks, and good conversation. But more than that, it’s about creating something that gives back, making books and community feel accessible to everyone.

Now

We’re hosting book fairs that are full of books, beer, and small businesses doing what they love. It’s all about bringing people together in a fun, low-pressure way to celebrate reading and support local.

Next

We’re working toward growing MKE Books & Beers into a small, local organization that gives back in a big way. The goal is to bring books into shelters, hospitals, and other spaces in Milwaukee where access to reading isn’t always easy and remind people that stories can offer comfort, hope, and a sense of escape.
